UPDATE: Isabel Vasquez Identified as Passenger Killed in Crash with DUI Suspect William Bryan Cubias-Martinez, 26, on Hwy 65 in Placer County

Yuba City, CA – Isabel Vasquez, a 24-year-old UC Davis student from Yuba City, was identified as the passenger killed in a single-vehicle accident early Tuesday morning, October 29, 2024, according to KCRA.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident occurred around 1:20 AM on Highway 65 north of Nelson Lane in Placer County.

Isabel was reportedly a passenger in a vehicle driven by 26-year-old William Bryan Cubias-Martinez of Marysville. The vehicle veered off the roadway and overturned multiple times.

Isabel was ejected and suffered fatal injuries on-site. Cubias-Martinez was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and, after being released, was arrested on charges of felony vehicular manslaughter and DUI.

Isabel was a third-year student at UC Davis with aspirations in veterinary medicine. The Vazquez family has established a GoFundMe to assist with funeral expenses.

Cubias-Martinez remains in custody at the Placer County Jail, with a court appearance scheduled for November 7.

Passenger Liability

Driver liability insurance covers both those outside the vehicle and passengers inside. While it can be emotionally difficult to file a Wrongful Death or injury claim against someone close to the victim, the financial challenges after an accident can be overwhelming.

A skilled personal injury attorney can help families pursue proper compensation for their loss by handling these legal complexities and negotiating with insurance companies, who always try to reduce payouts on claims they cannot deny.

California DUI Law

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
