Carlsbad, CA – A trip to Los Cabos turned into a heartbreaking accident for a Richmond couple whose names have been released as Jose Lozano and Luz Duran Rios when their journey was cut short by a crash with a DUI driver, according to The Richmond Standard.
The couple were traveling in a green Jeep Grand Cherokee along Interstate 5 at approximately 4:30 AM on January 13, 2024. Angela Hays of Corona was behind the wheel of a Hyundai sedan that allegedly crashed into the Jeep, causing it to overturn. The situation escalated as a Nissan Altima also collided with the overturned Jeep.
Rios lost her life at the scene, and her husband, Lozano, succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital. The driver of the Nissan suffered major but non-life-threatening injuries.
The California Highway Patrol took Angela Hays into custody at the scene on multiple felony charges.
Wrongful Death Claims
Losing a loved one to another person’s reckless driving can leave their families with not just an emotional wound but a financial burden in the form of hospital fees, burial costs, and the loss of support toward dependents of the deceased. It may seem that a service like GoFundMe might be the only way to handle these unexpected costs, but the insurance provider for the at-fault driver should be able to compensate that family if they file a wrongful death claim.
The help of a skilled personal injury attorney can prove crucial at this time by guiding a grieving family through this legal process and stepping up to negotiate with the at-fault driver’s insurance company on behalf of the family, to ensure they receive the proper compensation.
