A multi-vehicle pile-up near Ventura tragically claimed one life and injured several other victims. The California Highway Patrol said the frightening accident happened Monday morning in the northbound lanes of Highway 101 on May 15, 2023.
The VC Star reported the chain-reaction crash occurred around 9:30 a.m. northwest of Ventura. NBC4-TV said it happened near Solimar Beach.
CHP investigators found that five cars had collided. NBC4 reported that it started with a Honda CR-V and a utility truck impact that soon drew in other vehicles. The two initial vehicles caught fire in the aftermath.
CHP officials said that one person’s life had been claimed and several other people were treated for injuries on the scene. It was not clear how many victims were sent to the hospital.
The CHP shut down multiple lanes through the afternoon hours while investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Accident Dangers on Hwy 101 in Ventura County
Highway 101 merges local traffic with tourist traffic every day of the year. The increased traffic and no lack of careless drivers lead to dangerous crashes almost every day.
California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) recorded 370 traffic accidents involving injury on Highway 101 through Ventura County in 2022. Those accidents caused at least five tragic deaths. Those accidents are up from last year’s figure of 347 serious accidents on Highway 101. Fatal accidents dropped in 2022 over 2021 when there were 12 fatalities reported.
Locals and visitors must do better about keeping others safe through Ventura and along Highway 101. Slowing down when traffic starts to build and keeping speeds in check even when there’s open highway ahead can help prevent tragic incidents each week.
