Cyclist Severely Injured in PCH Hit and Run January 2023

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is searching for a hit-and-run suspect after a tragic bicycle hit-and-run accident along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Ventura County. Investigators say the collision occurred Friday morning around 5:30 a.m. along Highway 1 north of Ventura on January 13, 2023.

The Ventura Star reported the accident took place near Faria Beach Park. The CHP determined that a man was riding a bike in the bike lane along the northbound lanes of Highway 1 when he was struck from behind.

The victim, a 22-year-old man from Santa Barbara, was transported to Ventura County Medical Center with what were determined to be major injuries. An update on the victim’s condition hasn’t been released.

The driver involved fled the scene. Investigators found a piece of a faded gray bumper cover in the area. They believe it came from the vehicle involved. No other description of the vehicle or the driver has been released. The CHP hopes that anyone with information about what happened will contact the California Highway Patrol’s Ventura office.

Cycling Accident Dangers on Highway 101 in Ventura County

Many cyclists love to travel the PCH to enjoy the fresh air and the views. They also like the challenge of scenic ocean curves and mountain climbs. Sadly, even with the benefit of a bike lane, riders at still placed in jeopardy by careless and reckless drivers.

The California Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) recorded 212 bicycle accidents involving injury along Ventura County roads in 2021. Those accidents led to at least 3 tragic deaths. At least 8 of those collisions happened along the lanes of Highway 1.

While the PCH is one of the most beautiful drives in the world, those views aren’t worth the lives of a motorist, a cyclist, or a pedestrian.

Drivers must remain focused at all hours while traveling Highway 1. They have the legal duty to slow down when they see a cyclist, even a rider in a bike lane, to make sure there’s no chance of a collision. This careful driving is the only way to bring down the number of yearly bicycle accidents along the Pacific Coast.

A note about Ventura County cycling accidents…

According to Quirk Accident & Injury Attorneys, APC, “if a hit-and-run suspect is arrested, a claim for damages can be filed immediately against the driver’s auto insurance company. Families don’t have to wait on the results of a criminal trial to ask for help, because the two cases will be separate.”
