Two Fatalities in Fiery Big Rig Crash in Ventura County

A fiery head-on collision in western Moorpark claimed two lives and left two victims hospitalized Monday afternoon. The California Highway Patrol and the Ventura County Fire Department responded to the scene around 3 p.m. on November 15, 2021.

The Ventura County Star reported the tragic accident took place on Grimes Canyon Road at Meadowglade Drive. Investigators say the collision involved a Toyota Sedan and a Peterbilt semi-truck pulling a trailer. Both vehicles broke out in flames. The Fire Department was able to quickly extinguish the fires.

There were three occupants in the Toyota. Two victims tragically died on the scene and another victim suffered major injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was also transported to the hospital with injuries.

A Highway Patrol Spokesman says the collision occurred in a curve on Grimes Canyon Road. Investigators believe speed was likely a factor in the accident.

Truck Accident Dangers in Moorpark

Heavy trucks and semis travel Moorpark roads night and day. These large vehicles are familiar sites in and around the city and drivers have gotten used to allowing them extra room on tight two-lane roads.

A distracted or careless truck driver can make a hazardous trip even more dangerous when they don’t show caution to other drivers. A giant truck can end up running a nearby vehicle right off the road. Drivers can also take their eyes from the lanes and end up in the path of oncoming traffic to cause a devastating impact.

Truck accidents are a constant risk for travelers across Ventura County. The accidents they are involved with are tracked by California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS).  In 2020, Ventura County recorded 126 collisions involving trucks. Shockingly, those accidents caused 164 people to suffer injuries and tragically claimed 4 lives.

When truck drivers take to the road in such physically imposing vehicles, carrying such heavy loads, extreme caution must be taken to safely share the lanes with motorists and pedestrians.
