Lawsuit Claims Man Shot and Killed by Illinois Police Was Unarmed

Miguel Vega, 26, was shot and killed by police in Pilsen, Illinois in 2020.  On Friday, August 27th, 2021, Vega’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in the case.

Block Club Chicago reported that Vega’s family Alleges that the man was unarmed and was running away from police officers in Pilsen when he was shot and killed. The lawsuit specifically names Officers Zachary Kuta and Matthew Krzeptowski.

Vega was killed on August 31st, 2020. Officers were traveling through the neighborhood in an unmarked squad car and saw a group of people standing on the sidewalk. According to a witness, shots were fired at the police car, and Officer Krzeptowski fired in response, fatally hitting Vega.

Vega was struck in the head and was transported to Stroger Hospital, where he later died. Video footage of the encounter was released late last year.

The lawsuit alleges that “the city has failed to adequately and impartially investigate and properly disciplined officers for use of force for decades, resulting in the harm caused to Vega.”

We expect to learn more about this lawsuit later this year.
