San Mateo County, CA – On the morning of Sunday, September 20, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality on Interstate 280, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 7:33 AM near the Bunker Hill Drive off-ramp.
Authorities said a black Volkswagen Tiguan struck what was possibly a large rock, going approximately 20 feet off the roadway. Fire personnel responded to the scene and checked on the driver’s condition. San Mateo County officials were notified and responded.
Investigators later connected the crash to an earlier traffic collision notification received involving the same vehicle on southbound Interstate 280 just north of Black Mountain, which officers had been unable to locate at the time.
A tow was requested for the Volkswagen.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
