San Carlos, CA – Early Sunday morning, August 30, 2026, a pedestrian was struck and killed in a crash in San Mateo County, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that dispatchers initially received reports around 2:44 AM regarding a pedestrian walking across the traffic lanes of U.S. 101.
Officers initiated a traffic break to halt oncoming vehicles, but the pedestrian was struck shortly after in the southbound lanes near the Holly Street off-ramp. Emergency medical personnel and the San Mateo Fire Department responded to the scene, where the pedestrian was pronounced dead at 3:05 AM.
Involved vehicles noted at the scene included a gray Kia Telluride and a white Dodge Challenger that sustained moderate front-end damage. Officers issued a SigAlert and temporarily shut down the southbound lanes of U.S. 101 to allow emergency crews to perform life-saving measures and clear the scene. All lanes were fully reopened around 5:15 AM.
CHP has not released the identity of the deceased, nor have officers confirmed whether speed, visibility, or impairment were contributing factors in the crash. The incident remains under investigation.
