Fatal Crash at SR-198, Wartham Canyon Rd in Coalinga

Coalinga, CA – On the afternoon of Thursday, August 27, 2026, a major two-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality near Coalinga in Fresno County, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident occurred around 3:33 PM at the intersection of State Route 198 and Wartham Canyon Road.

Authorities said the collision involved a white Dodge Ram 2500 flatbed tow truck and a white Ford pickup truck towing a trailer. The impact left both vehicles resting on the right-hand shoulder. Firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene to perform extrication after drivers in both vehicles became pinned inside their cabs.

Emergency crews shut down the eastbound lanes of SR-198 to facilitate rescue operations, and Life Flight airlifted one critically injured party for emergency medical treatment. CHP dispatch logs later confirmed that one individual succumbed to their injuries.

CHP has not released whether speed, mechanical failure, or alcohol were factors in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.

Fresno County Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims

Under California law, multi-vehicle collisions at highway intersections often involve complex questions of liability where fault may be divided among involved parties under the state’s comparative negligence doctrine. When more than one driver contributes to a crash, financial responsibility is assigned based on each party’s percentage of fault.

If investigators determine that a driver violated traffic laws — such as failing to yield the right-of-way, speeding, or making an unsafe turn — that motorist may be found to have committed negligence per se, establishing clear legal responsibility for the collision.

Regardless of initial law enforcement findings, the surviving family members of the deceased may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. A claim can help surviving loved ones secure compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, medical bills, and loss of consortium resulting from the fatal accident.
