Bakersfield, CA – In the early hours of Sunday, August 16, 2026, a wrong-way collision involving three vehicles resulted in a fatality, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:44 AM on southbound State Route 99.
Authorities said a wrong-way driver was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes at a high rate of speed when the vehicle collided with a Chevrolet coupe and an additional vehicle. As a result of the impact, one vehicle became fully engulfed in flames while a passenger appeared trapped inside another vehicle with major injuries. Fire personnel began working underneath one of the vehicles to assist. The burning vehicle came to rest in the center divide, while the other two vehicles came to rest on the right shoulder, with debris scattered across all lanes.
All lanes were blocked following the crash, and units were advised they could travel the wrong way on 7th Standard Road to access the scene. Traffic was diverted off southbound State Route 99 at Lerdo Highway, and Caltrans was contacted for a hard closure, arriving with an estimated response time of 45 minutes. A traffic break was initiated from Merced Avenue. The Lerdo Highway on-ramp to southbound State Route 99 was also closed during the response.
Union Pacific Railroad dispatch was notified given the crash’s proximity to nearby train tracks. Fire personnel were called back to the scene to open the doors of the burned vehicle, accessing the area the wrong way from 8th Standard Road. Two tow trucks were requested for the vehicles, both directed to enter the scene against traffic due to the closure.
Lanes reopened incrementally beginning at approximately 3:05 AM, with all lanes fully open by 5:20 AM.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Bakersfield Car Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims
California law requires all drivers to maintain proper lane discipline and prohibits driving against the flow of traffic under any circumstances. When a wrong-way driver causes a fatal multi-vehicle collision, that driver may be considered to have committed negligence per se, increasing his or her estate’s share of liability for the resulting death.
Regardless of the findings, the family of the deceased may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. A wrongful death claim can provide the family with compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, loss of consortium, and other damages related to the fatal accident.
