Bakersfield, CA – In the early hours of Sunday, July 19, 2026, a pedestrian collision resulted in a fatality on southbound State Route 99 near White Lane, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 1:48 AM.
Authorities said a pedestrian was reported in the middle lane and allegedly lunged at a passing vehicle before a witness observed the pedestrian struck by another vehicle traveling behind them.
A pickup truck was reported possibly involved and last seen pulling to the right shoulder. The pedestrian was found in the roadway with an obvious fatality. A second involved vehicle, described as a white bobtail truck with a beige trailer marked “Swift,” was later located at a nearby truck stop, with debris from the collision found on the vehicle.
A traffic break was initiated, and lanes two through four were closed, with traffic diverted off the freeway at White Lane. The White Lane on-ramp to southbound State Route 99 was closed in both directions during the response. A tow was requested for one of the vehicles involved, and the vehicle was later transported to an evidence yard.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Partial Liability in Pedestrian Accidents
California Law does not consider pedestrians to have the right-of-way under all circumstances, such as when they attempt to cross outside of a crosswalk. However, motorists are never relieved of the expectation to provide pedestrians with a duty of care toward their safety.
It may therefore be determined that a motorist is subject to partial liability in a pedestrian accident. Should that be the case, they would be financially responsible for the victim’s recovery costs in proportion to their degree of liability.
