The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 3:57 PM in the Peardale area.
Authorities said a Ford Edge went off the roadway and became wedged between two trees before overturning onto its roof, scattering debris across the roadway. A large number of bystanders gathered at the scene.
One of the trees involved in the collision was found to be compromised and of substantial size, requiring Caltrans to respond for an inspection, prompting a full road closure. State Route 174 was closed at Peardale Road, with a second closure established at You Bet Road. A SigAlert was issued due to the extended closure.
A downed communication cable was also reported in the roadway near Lower Colfax, with Nevada County Roads and the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office notified to respond.
A wrecker and flatbed tow truck were requested for the Ford Edge. The roadway was fully reopened at approximately 8:29 PM.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
