San Leandro, CA – On the evening of Thursday, June 19, 2026, a pedestrian collision resulted in a fatality on northbound Interstate 880 near the Davis Street off-ramp, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 10:42 PM.
Authorities said the pedestrian had been observed face down on the right shoulder, waving his arms before crossing lanes toward the right side of the freeway. A witness slowed to avoid him, but a vehicle traveling behind struck the pedestrian, who ended up in lanes one or two.
The involved vehicle pulled over to the right shoulder following the collision. CCTV cameras were positioned away from the collision location, and no footage was available.
A traffic break was initiated, and lanes one through three were blocked while emergency personnel attended to the scene. A SigAlert was issued for northbound Interstate 880 north of Davis Street with an unknown estimated time of opening.
Oakland Fire Department was notified due to the jurisdictional boundary between Alameda County and Oakland. The coroner was notified and directed to access the scene via the Davis Street on-ramp. An evidence tow was requested for the involved vehicle.
Both on-ramps to northbound Interstate 880 at Davis Street were temporarily closed before being reopened. The SigAlert was cancelled, and all lanes were reopened at approximately 1:13 AM.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
