San Joaquin County, CA – On the evening of Friday, June 12, 2026, a head-on collision on State Route 88 resulted in a fatality near East Tokay Colony Road, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 8:28 PM.
Authorities said a blue sedan and a black sedan collided head-on, with both vehicles overturning onto their roofs and sustaining major damage. Debris was scattered across the roadway following the impact, though the road remained passable. A possible fatality was reported in the blue vehicle.
All lanes of State Route 88 were closed just west of Tokay Colony Road, with turning traffic accommodated during the closure. Caltrans was notified and implemented a hard closure with an estimated reopening of one to two hours.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office was notified to respond in its capacity as coroner. Stockton Fire Department also responded to the scene. Two evidence tows were requested for the vehicles, both of which had sustained major damage from overturning. The roadway was reopened at approximately 11:50 PM.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
