Brentwood, CA – In the early hours of Tuesday, June 9, 2026, a collision resulted in a fatality on eastbound State Route 4 near Balfour Road, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 1:41 AM.
Authorities said the collision involved an older BMW sedan and a Ford F-550 pickup truck carrying landscaping equipment. The Ford overturned onto its side, blocking the right lane, while the BMW came to rest in the center divide. Debris was scattered across all lanes following the impact.
The male driver of the pickup was found outside the vehicle and seated on the ground requiring medical attention. A witness in a UPS truck stopped on the right shoulder and reported the collision to emergency services.
Contra Costa County Fire Department and emergency medical services responded to the scene. A SigAlert was issued closing all eastbound lanes of State Route 4 at Balfour Road with an unknown estimated time of opening, with traffic diverted at Sand Creek Road for approximately two hours. Caltrans was notified and responded.
Three tow trucks were requested for the vehicles involved, with an evidence tow designated for one of the vehicles. Remaining debris, including branches, shrubs, and miscellaneous items, was left on the right shoulder for Caltrans pickup. All lanes were reopened and the SigAlert cancelled at approximately 4:58 AM.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
