SR-9 Crash Kills Motorcyclist in Palo Alto

Palo Alto, CA – On the afternoon of Sunday, June 7, 2026, a single-vehicle motorcycle collision resulted in a fatality on State Route 9, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:43 PM.

Authorities said the motorcycle was traveling at excessive speed when it washed out and slid off the roadway, catching fire following the crash. The rider sustained injuries at the scene. Other vehicles passing the area were reported to have been traveling at excessively high speeds as well. Traffic was stopped in both directions near a pullout while emergency personnel responded.

CAL FIRE requested a closure of State Route 9 at State Route 35, with closure points established just south of Sempervirens and at the top of the State Route 35 and State Route 9 junction. A water tender was positioned blocking Sempervirens Mid-Peninsula Gate 14. One-way traffic control was set up in the southbound lanes while the scene was processed. Caltrans was notified and coordinated with authorities during the closure.

The motorcycle was located approximately two to three feet from the fog line in a dirt turnout and was designated as an evidence vehicle. The coroner arrived on scene at approximately 2:39 PM. The motorcycle was transported to a tow yard in Watsonville following the conclusion of on-scene proceedings.

No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
