Placer County, CA – In the early hours of Tuesday, May 27, 2026, a multi-vehicle collision involving an overturned fuel tanker resulted in a fatality, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:13 PM on eastbound Interstate 80 near the Clipper Gap Road overpass.
Authorities said the collision involved a gray Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and a big rig fuel tanker, with a second collision also occurring on the eastbound side involving a white or silver pickup truck.
The fuel tanker overturned and came to rest on the westbound side of the freeway, with leaking fuel covering the ground approximately 15 feet from the flames of a burning pickup truck. Debris and liquid were scattered across the freeway following the impact. The driver of the big rig fled the scene on foot and was last seen wearing a black hoodie.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office was notified and deployed a drone with thermal camera capability to assist in locating the suspect, with a male matching the description located in the backyard of a residence at 15640 Lake Arthur Road near the scene.
The tanker trailer was confirmed to have been carrying water rather than flammable fuel, and Placer Hills Fire Department determined there was no hazmat situation. Caltrans implemented a closure with traffic diverted at Clipper Gap Road, with a rotator tow truck requested to right the overturned tanker.
The big rig was transported to the tow yard following the conclusion of recovery operations. Caltrans personnel set down concrete in the center divide as part of the cleanup effort. All lanes were reopened at approximately 4:23 AM.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Hit-and-Runs and Wrongful Death Claims
The compensation provided by a wrongful death claim can financially support families grieving the loss of a loved one due to another person’s negligence. These funds can go toward hospital bills, burial expenses, and help support any dependents of the deceased.
In cases where the at-fault party escapes justice, families may still be able to pursue compensation through their own uninsured driver coverage. A personal injury attorney can offer guidance on what options they may have available and negotiate with insurance companies to ensure that victims receive the best settlement possible.
