Belmont, CA – On the evening of Thursday, May 21, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality on southbound Interstate 280 near the State Route 92 connector, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 8:31 PM.
Authorities said a blue Toyota Matrix struck both walls of the center divide and went into a ditch. A passing Tesla driver pulled over and reported that the occupant appeared to have passed out inside the vehicle.
A traffic break was initiated and emergency medical services were requested. Fire department personnel blocked the number one lane while responders attended to the scene.
Lanes one and two were closed during the response, with Caltrans notified to update changeable message signs. A tow was requested for the blue Toyota Matrix, and the vehicle was stored following the conclusion of on-scene proceedings. All lanes were reopened at approximately 10:01 PM, with the incident confirmed as a fatality shortly after.
