San Leandro, CA – In the early hours of Sunday, May 3, 2026, a multi-vehicle collision involving a box truck resulted in a fatality on northbound Interstate 880 near the Davis Street off-ramp, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:19 AM.
Authorities said the collision involved a white BMW and a white box truck carrying approximately 26,000 pounds of meat, along with three to four additional vehicles. The BMW was found facing the wrong way on the right shoulder, with the box truck coming to rest on the Davis Street off-ramp.
A mangled vehicle was found crushed in front of the box truck on the off-ramp. Car parts and debris were scattered across all lanes following the collision. Transportation Management Center cameras captured footage of the crash, with the first collision logged at 4:14 AM and a second at 4:18 AM.
A traffic break was initiated and all northbound lanes were blocked, with a SigAlert issued for northbound Interstate 880 south of Davis Street with an unknown estimated time of opening. Caltrans implemented a hard closure and activated changeable message signs directing big rig traffic to Interstate 580. The Washington Street and Lewelling on-ramps to northbound Interstate 880 were also closed during the response. Both ambulances transported patients to Eden Medical Center.
The coroner was notified and responded to the scene. Evidence tows were requested for two vehicles, and a wrecker was dispatched to assist in moving the damaged box truck.
The Davis Street off-ramp remained closed for an extended period to facilitate the recovery of the box truck. All lanes were reopened and the SigAlert cancelled at approximately 9:37 AM. The investigation remains ongoing.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
