Alameda County, CA – In the early hours of Friday, April 25, 2026, a multi-vehicle collision resulting from a suspected wrong-way driver resulted in a fatality and left at least one person hospitalized, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 1:57 AM on northbound Interstate 680 north of State Route 84.
Authorities said the collision involved a Toyota Prius, an SUV, and at least one additional vehicle. The SUV overturned and caught fire following the impact, with a possible occupant reported inside the burning vehicle.
Flames were visible at the scene, and debris was scattered across the roadway. Investigators indicated the collision appeared to involve a wrong-way driver, and a hard closure was requested for the affected stretch of freeway.
Lanes three and four were initially blocked, with all lanes eventually closed while emergency personnel worked the scene. Traffic was diverted from northbound Interstate 680 to westbound State Route 84 during the closure.
Caltrans responded and implemented the hard closure, with a blood technician dispatched to Washington Hospital in connection with the investigation. A SigAlert was issued for the affected lanes.
One party sustained major injuries and was transported to Washington Hospital, where they remained in the ICU, unconscious and intubated, with no confirmed identification at the time of reporting. The coroner was also notified and responded to the scene.
Two evidence tows were requested for the vehicles involved. All lanes were fully reopened at approximately 5:54 AM following the conclusion of on-scene proceedings.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
