Coalinga, CA – In the early hours of Tuesday, April 21, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality on southbound Interstate 5 near the State Route 198 junction, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 2:22 AM on just south of State Route 145.
Authorities said a sedan was found overturned in the center divide with front and rear end damage, with the vehicle on fire upon initial reports. Two occupants were observed walking around the vehicle at the time of the initial report. CAL FIRE was notified and responded, with the vehicle found fully engulfed upon the arrival of responding units.
The vehicle, a 2004 GMC Yukon, was completely burned by the time the coroner arrived on scene. The coroner responded and the incident was confirmed as a single-vehicle fatality. A tow was requested for the completely burned vehicle following the conclusion of on-scene proceedings.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
