Contra Costa County, CA – On the evening of Tuesday, March 31, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality on westbound State Route 24 near the Acalanes Road off-ramp, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 5:16 PM.
Authorities said a silver Toyota Corolla struck a tree and became wrapped around it on the right shoulder, coming to rest approximately 15 to 30 feet off the roadway. One occupant was found trapped inside the vehicle, and fire department units initiated CPR upon arrival. Jaws of Life equipment was used to extricate the occupant from the wreckage.
A SigAlert was issued closing lanes four and five of westbound State Route 24 east of Acalanes Road with an unknown estimated time of opening. A flatbed tow truck was requested for the vehicle, which required special handling due to its position wrapped around a utility post.
Lanes were reopened at approximately 6:51 PM following the conclusion of on-scene proceedings. Caltrans was notified of the clearance.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
