Fatal, Fiery Crash on SR-178 near Kelso Valley Rd in Kern County

Kern County, CA – On the afternoon of Saturday, March 28, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality on State Route 178 near Kelso Valley Road, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:35 PM.

Authorities said a vehicle struck a tree and caught fire, with the occupant pinned inside. Bystanders at the scene attempted to extinguish the flames before emergency personnel arrived. 

Responding units arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed, with the occupant still inside. The coroner was subsequently notified and responded to the scene.

No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased or the circumstances leading to the collision had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
