San Leandro, CA – In the early hours of Friday, March 21, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in two fatalities, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 5:31 AM on southbound Interstate 880 near the Davis Street off-ramp.
Authorities said a gray sedan struck the right shoulder wall and came to rest wedged between an exit sign and a guardrail, facing the correct direction of traffic with no hazard lights activated. The driver remained inside the vehicle at the time of initial reports. A large piece of wood debris was found blocking the middle lane and was identified as a possible contributing factor in the collision.
Fire department personnel arrived and worked to extract the occupants from the vehicle, which was pinned against the guardrail. Two fatalities were confirmed at the scene, one of whom was identified as a female occupant. The number four lane was blocked during the response while fire department units attended to the vehicle.
A tow truck was requested for the black Nissan Maxima, which required approximately 50 feet of cable to extract from its position between the guardrail and a pole. Caltrans was notified, and the coroner was contacted and responded to the scene. All lanes were reopened at approximately 9:03 AM following the completion of vehicle recovery and on-scene investigative proceedings.
No additional details regarding the identities of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
Passenger Liability
Driver liability insurance covers both those outside the vehicle and passengers inside. While it can be emotionally difficult to file a wrongful death claim against someone close to the victim, the financial challenges after an accident can be overwhelming. As a neutral third party, an experienced personal injury attorney can help navigate these emotional complexities.
