I-5, I-505 Multi-Vehicle Crash Kills 1, Injures 1 in Yolo

Yolo County, CA – In the early hours of Monday, March 10, 2026, a wrong-way collision on Interstate 5 southbound resulted in a fatality and left at least one other person requiring emergency surgery, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:00 AM on southbound Interstate 5 near the Interstate 505 junction.

Authorities said a vehicle was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 when it collided head-on with oncoming traffic. Initial reports described the collision as involving a big rig and a sedan, with the sedan catching fire following the impact. Additional reports indicated that two big rigs and multiple vehicles may have been involved. A red vehicle and a black vehicle were confirmed to be blocking both lanes following the crash, with flames and smoke visible at the scene.

Both vehicle occupants were initially unable to exit their vehicles. Yolo Fire Department responded to the scene, and an extrication operation was conducted. One party was transported to UC Davis Medical Center, where they were taken directly into surgery upon arrival. Neither the identity of the deceased nor the identity of the surviving party had been confirmed, as no identification was found in the belongings of either individual at the time of reporting.

Southbound lanes were closed at County Road 6 while emergency personnel and investigators worked the scene. A Caltrans sweeper was requested and had an estimated arrival of two to three hours. Evidence tows were requested for the vehicles involved, and the roadway was fully reopened at approximately 3:38 AM following the completion of on-scene proceedings. The investigation remains ongoing.

Ongoing Investigations

Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.

Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
