Suspected DUI Crash Kills 1, Injures 2 near SR-20, Spring Valley Rd in Lake County

Lake County, CA – On the evening of Sunday, March 8, 2026, a suspected DUI collision resulted in at least one fatality and left two people seriously injured on State Route 20, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 10:08 PM on State Route 20 between the 16700 and 16951 blocks, near Spring Valley Road.

Authorities said an oncoming vehicle crossed into the westbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision with major damage to both vehicles. One vehicle, a Honda Odyssey, sustained major damage and remained on the roadway. A second vehicle went over the edge of the roadway and came to rest approximately 50 feet down an embankment.

A male driver was reported trapped inside a van at the scene, and a big rig stopped nearby with hazard lights activated, with the driver directing a passerby to call 911. An unconfirmed report indicated that a white sedan may have fled the scene following the collision.

Both lanes of State Route 20 were blocked in the immediate aftermath of the crash, with debris and vehicles obstructing the roadway. One occupant from each vehicle required extrication, and both were subsequently airlifted from the scene.

One party was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, and the other was transported by ground to an additional hospital, though the specific destinations for each individual had not been confirmed at the time of reporting.

CAL FIRE Helena and Caltrans were notified and responded to assist with the scene. One-way traffic control was implemented as crews worked to clear the roadway, which was fully reopened at approximately 1:08 AM. The incident was ultimately classified as a fatal DUI collision. The investigation remains ongoing.

California DUI Law

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”

Wrongful Death Claims

Losing a loved one in a traffic accident is devastating, and the pain can be made worse by the financial strain that often follows. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of income to support dependents of the deceased can leave families struggling. Filing a Wrongful Death claim against those responsible can provide compensation to help with these expenses.
