SR-85, SR-82 Connector Crash Kills 1 in Santa Clara County

Santa Clara County, CA – On the evening of Sunday, March 8, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality on State Route 85 southbound near the State Route 82 connector, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 10:34 PM on the off-ramp from southbound State Route 85 near the northbound State Route 82 connector.

Authorities said a red Mazda Miata convertible departed the roadway and came to rest approximately 25 to 35 feet off the roadway. The vehicle was occupied by a single party at the time of the crash. Fire department units were dispatched, and responding officers blocked the off-ramp while emergency personnel attended to the scene.

The incident was subsequently upgraded to a fatality. Caltrans was notified and coordinated with authorities during the closure. A tow truck was requested for the Miata, and the off-ramp was reopened following the vehicle’s removal at approximately 1:27 AM. The case was flagged to remain open for coroner proceedings.

No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
