Contra Costa County, CA – In the early hours of Tuesday, March 3, 2026, a pedestrian fatality was reported on Interstate 80 westbound near the Willow Avenue off-ramp, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:50 PM.
Authorities said a body was discovered in the number two lane of westbound Interstate 80, with a gray 2006 Honda Civic found stopped on the right shoulder nearby. Responding units and the Contra Costa Fire Department confirmed the presence of the deceased in the roadway. The Pinole Police Department reported that family members of the possible victim had come forward and were being assisted at the Cummings Skyway on-ramp.
The coroner was notified and responded to the scene. A SigAlert was issued, closing all westbound lanes of Interstate 80 at Cummings Skyway, with traffic diverted to the Cummings Skyway off-ramp. Motorists were advised to use alternate routes as the estimated time of opening was unknown. A hard closure was confirmed and coordinated with Caltrans, with changeable message signs activated to alert drivers.
The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and Hercules Police Department assisted with traffic control at the scene, with units stationed at on-ramps to prevent vehicles from entering the closed stretch of freeway. An evidence tow was requested for the Honda Civic, which was later removed by Oliver’s Towing.
All lanes were reopened at approximately 2:10 AM following the conclusion of on-scene investigative proceedings. The identity of the deceased had not been confirmed at the time of reporting, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, which includes being vigilant for those travelling by foot and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver evade authorities, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
