Fremont, CA – In the early hours of Tuesday, March 3, 2026, a multi-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality on Interstate 880 southbound near the Decoto Road off-ramp, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:04 AM.
Authorities said a white van and a sedan were observed via closed-circuit television blocking the number one lane of southbound Interstate 880 just south of Decoto Road following the collision. A traffic break was initiated by responding officers approaching from the northbound direction, with all lanes subsequently confirmed blocked. Lanes one and two remained closed during the investigation while other lanes were incrementally reopened.
A Toyota sedan sustained major front-end damage in the collision and was later towed from the scene by a flatbed tow truck. The initial tow service was unable to accommodate the vehicle, and a second tow company was dispatched. The tow truck from the second service encountered traffic delays on southbound Interstate 880 just north of Decoto Road before reaching the scene.
The Alameda County Coroner was notified and responded to the scene. Caltrans was also contacted and coordinated with authorities during the closure. All lanes of Interstate 880 were fully reopened at approximately 5:40 AM following the conclusion of on-scene proceedings.
The identity of the deceased had not been released at the time of reporting, and no further details regarding the circumstances of the collision were available. The investigation remains ongoing.
