Fatal Motorcycle vs Tesla Crash on SR-29 near Hoffman Ln in Napa County

Napa County, CA – On the afternoon of Saturday, February 28, 2026, a collision between a motorcycle and a Tesla resulted in a fatality, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:11 PM on State Route 29 southbound near Hoffman Lane.

Authorities said the crash involved a black motorcycle and a silver Tesla, with the motorcycle rider coming to rest on the right shoulder before being found down in the first lane of travel. Both vehicles were blocking lanes one and two at the time first responders arrived on scene.

CAL FIRE was notified and responded to assist at the scene. All southbound lanes of State Route 29 were blocked following the collision, and a SigAlert was issued with an unknown estimated time of opening. Traffic was diverted the wrong way down an off-ramp while the California on-ramp was closed to through traffic. Caltrans was also contacted and coordinated with authorities during the closure.

Two evidence tow trucks were requested for both the Tesla and the motorcycle, both of which sustained major damage. Responding units confirmed the tow service was en route from Pope Valley. A CAL FIRE unit was later stationed at the intersection for vehicle storage purposes.

All southbound lanes were reopened at approximately 7:52 PM, and Caltrans was notified of the cleared scene shortly thereafter. A family member of one of those involved was later reported to have a vehicle parked and locked at the scene near where the crash occurred.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.

Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
