Alameda County, CA – On the evening of Wednesday, February 25, 2026, a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision resulted in a fatality, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 9:29 PM on the eastbound Interstate 580 off-ramp at Grove Way.
Dispatch records indicate the reporting party advised that a pedestrian appeared to run into the roadway. The reporting party, or responsible driver, stopped on the right-hand shoulder following the collision. Responding units arrived and issued safety advisements while directing traffic on the off-ramp.
Fire personnel responded to the scene and blocked the off-ramp to protect emergency crews and preserve the integrity of the investigation. Authorities confirmed that the off-ramp and portions of lanes three and four were impacted during the response. The Transportation Management Center and the California Department of Transportation were notified to assist with traffic control measures and lane closure coordination.
As part of standard fatal collision protocol, the coroner was requested to the scene. Fire department personnel maintained communication with law enforcement while the scene was processed.
Shortly after midnight, all lanes were reopened to traffic, and transportation officials were advised that the roadway was clear. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin. The collision remains under active investigation as authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Partial Liability in Pedestrian Accidents
California Law does not consider pedestrians to have the right-of-way under all circumstances, such as when they attempt to cross outside of a crosswalk. However, motorists are never relieved of the expectation to provide pedestrians with a Duty of Care toward their safety.
It may therefore be determined that a motorist is subject to partial liability in a pedestrian accident. Should that be the case, they would be financially responsible for the victim’s recovery costs in proportion to their degree of liability.
