Richmond, CA – On the evening of Monday, February 23, 2026, a multi-vehicle crash resulted in major injuries after several sedans collided with a center divider, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 10:56 PM on westbound Interstate 80 near the Cutting Boulevard off-ramp.
Initial reports indicated an orange four-door sedan struck the center divide and became disabled in Lane 1. Additional callers reported a gold Buick sedan and a gray or blue Toyota Corolla also collided with either the divider or left-hand shoulder, with at least one vehicle coming to rest diagonally across Lanes 1 and 2.
Authorities advised that an adult male was seen outside of a vehicle standing in Lane 2 shortly after the crash. Emergency medical services were dispatched, and the incident was later reclassified as a major-injury collision. Specific details regarding the number of injured parties and the extent of injuries have not been released.
All westbound lanes were temporarily blocked as officers secured the scene and coordinated medical response and towing services. A SigAlert was issued at approximately 11:48 PM, warning motorists of a full freeway closure and significant delays.
The California Department of Transportation was notified, and traffic was diverted while crews worked to clear the roadway. The SigAlert was canceled shortly before 12:50 AM after all lanes reopened.
The crash remains under investigation as authorities review evidence and determine the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
