Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Motorcycle at I-680, SR-242 in Contra Costa County

Contra Costa County, CA – On the evening of Friday, February 20, 2026, a multi-vehicle traffic collision involving a motorcycle resulted in fatal injuries, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 6:18 PM on northbound Interstate 680 at the connector to northbound State Route 242.

Preliminary reports indicate the crash began when a motorcycle rider lost control and collided with the center divide. The motorcycle came to rest in the roadway, with the rider reportedly landing in active traffic lanes. Authorities received multiple reports describing the motorcycle and rider in lanes one through three.

Investigators later determined the initial impact with the center divide was followed by additional collisions involving other vehicles. A dark blue SUV and a black sedan were reported at or near the scene, with one vehicle stopping on the right shoulder. Officials also noted that a black Tesla had damage and video footage related to the incident.

At one point, the incident was described as involving up to four vehicles. A secondary collision involving a big rig and another vehicle blocking lanes two and three was also reported during the response.

Emergency personnel responded and closed lanes one through four on northbound Interstate 680. A SigAlert was issued, and Caltrans was requested to implement a hard closure and manage traffic control. Tow services were dispatched for multiple vehicles, including evidence tows for a motorcycle and a black Acura. All lanes were reopened later in the evening.

The collision was ultimately reclassified as a fatality. The investigation remains ongoing.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.

Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
