Crash into Creek Near I-880, Auto Mall Pkwy Kills Driver in Fremont

Fremont, CA – Early Tuesday morning, January 27, 2026, a fatal crash occurred on the northbound Interstate 880 off-ramp at Auto Mall Parkway, according to CHP Fatal.

Authorities reported that a single vehicle left the freeway, rolled down an embankment, and came to rest partially submerged in a creek.

First responders arrived shortly after midnight and confirmed that there was a body inside the vehicle. Fremont Police Department and the Alameda County Fire Department secured the scene, while CHP officers established a traffic break and directed vehicles to the right-hand shoulder to maintain safety.

Tow companies were requested to assist in the recovery of the vehicle, which had overturned 50 to 80 feet down the embankment. Caltrans personnel were notified, and inspections revealed that a light pole had been sheared off during the crash.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene as part of standard protocol for all traffic fatalities. Investigators are working to document the site, collect evidence, and determine the factors that contributed to the collision.

No additional information regarding the identity of the driver or potential causes has been released. The CHP continues to investigate the incident and has advised motorists to avoid the area while procedures and recovery operations are completed.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
