Woodland, CA– A fatal crash involving a big rig occurred on Interstate 5 South just north of County Road 102 on January 16, 2026, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reported that the accident involved a white tractor-trailer. Early information indicates that the driver may have experienced a medical episode prior to the collision, though authorities are continuing to examine all potential factors.
Fire department personnel were on scene and cleared the vehicle after initial response, and the CHP coordinated with California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to manage traffic closures and ensure roadway safety. A coroner was dispatched to the scene, and tow services were called to remove the tractor-trailer from the freeway.
The closure of all southbound lanes lasted several hours while responders and investigators conducted their work. The roadway was eventually reopened once the vehicle was cleared and traffic could safely resume.
CHP officials continue to review the crash details, including vehicle condition, road conditions, and any other contributing factors, as part of their standard investigative procedures.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
