Fatal, Foggy Crash on SR-99 near Betty Dr in Tulare County

Tulare County, CA – A fatal traffic collision occurred on the morning of Thursday, January 15, 2026, on northbound State Route 99 near Betty Drive, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that, at approximately 5:43 AM, a vehicle went off the roadway and came to rest on the right-hand shoulder. Initial reports indicate that dense fog in the area contributed to the incident, reducing visibility and creating hazardous driving conditions for motorists.

First responders were dispatched promptly and confirmed a fatality at the scene. Emergency personnel followed standard procedures, including securing the roadway, documenting the scene, coordinating with CHP officers, and preparing for evidence collection and vehicle removal.

The vehicle involved reportedly had a flat tire and became lodged between two parallel tracks, complicating recovery efforts. Tow crews were requested to access the freeway for removal, though surface street access was initially blocked by a nearby train. Rotation tow requests were coordinated to ensure safe and efficient clearance of the scene.

Traffic management measures were implemented, including lane closures and detours, while investigators conducted a detailed review of the circumstances leading to the collision. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine all contributing factors and complete the official report.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.

Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
