Sunnyvale, CA – On the evening of Wednesday, December 24, 2025, a single-vehicle rollover collision resulted in fatal injuries, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 8:51 PM at the Interstate 280 Northbound to State Route 85 South connector.
Initial reports indicated a white Lexus SUV had traveled from the southbound side, crossed over the center divide, and came to rest overturned in the center median on the northbound lanes of Interstate 280. CHP officials stated that the vehicle was found on its roof with extensive damage.
Occupants were not immediately visible at the scene, prompting a full roadway shutdown and coordinated traffic breaks in both directions to allow emergency crews to safely access the crash site. Authorities have not yet released any details regarding those involved in the crash, just that the wounds received resulted in the loss of life.
Fire department personnel responded and blocked lanes to assist with scene safety and emergency response. Due to the severity of the collision and resulting injuries, the incident was upgraded to a fatal traffic collision, and the coroner was requested.
Authorities implemented a SigAlert, closing northbound Interstate 280 and diverting all traffic to southbound and northbound State Route 85. Caltrans crews assisted with lane closures, traffic control, and roadway cleanup while tow services worked to remove the overturned vehicle.
Officials stated that all lanes were reopened shortly after 12:30 AM once the scene was cleared and investigative responsibilities were completed. The cause of the crash remains under investigation as CHP continues to examine vehicle movement, roadway conditions, and other contributing factors consistent with established collision review protocols.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
