Santa Cruz, CA – On the morning of Sunday, December 14, 2025, a single-vehicle crash on northbound State Route 17 near West Vine Hill Road resulted in a fatality, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident occurred around 10:40 AM when a vehicle lost control, rolled over, and struck a tree. The force of the collision caused the vehicle to go airborne over the center divider. Emergency responders, along with bystanders, stopped to assist the driver, who was found unconscious and unresponsive at the scene. CPR was performed by first responders.
All northbound lanes of SR-17 were initially blocked as emergency crews worked to stabilize the scene and coordinate with tow companies to remove the overturned vehicle. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) assisted with lane closures and traffic control throughout the rescue and investigation.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. At this time, CHP has not released details on the identity of the victim or whether alcohol, drugs, or other factors contributed to the crash. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are seeking any information from witnesses that could help determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
