Lathrop, CA – In the early hours of Sunday, December 7, 2025, a single-vehicle rollover collision resulted in an unidentified person losing their life, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident occurred around 1:00 AM on Interstate 5 South near the Interstate 205 West connector.
Authorities said a black SUV left the roadway, traveling over the right-hand shoulder before flipping. Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the occupant unresponsive. Despite their efforts, the individual suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the location of the crash.
The overturned vehicle required specialized tow services to remove it from the scene, and Caltrans crews assisted with traffic control and debris removal. The crash caused significant disruption, with lanes temporarily blocked to ensure the safety of other motorists and first responders.
Officials stated that the circumstances leading to the SUV leaving the roadway and overturning remain under investigation. The vehicle was eventually transported to a tow yard, and the roadway was cleared and reopened after several hours of investigation and cleanup.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
