Fatal Crash on US 101 at South Van Ness Ave in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA – In the early hours of Monday, December 8, 2025, a single-vehicle collision on a freeway on-ramp resulted in an unidentified person losing their life, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident occurred around 12:58 AM on the US 101 South on-ramp at South Van Ness Avenue.

Authorities said emergency responders were called after a subject was found unresponsive on the on-ramp. Fire department personnel arrived quickly and confirmed that the individual had suffered fatal injuries at the scene. It was not immediately clear whether the person was on the right or left shoulder of the ramp when found.

The incident caused at least one lane to be blocked while responders secured the scene and coordinated with the coroner. Caltrans and tow services were called to assist with traffic control, debris management, and vehicle removal to ensure the safety of motorists.

Officials stated that the exact circumstances leading to the person being on the on-ramp remain under investigation. The on-ramp was cleared and reopened after several hours once the scene was documented, and the vehicle or other evidence was removed.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.

Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
