San Rafael, CA – One person was killed on the evening of Tuesday, November 4, 2025, in a crash near the intersection of 2nd Street and Irwin Street, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:54 PM near the on-ramp to southbound Highway 101.
Responding officers and firefighters found one individual with fatal injuries near the freeway prior to the on-ramp area. Despite immediate efforts from first responders, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Marin County Coroner’s Office was called to the site to take over the investigation and will release the victim’s name once family members have been notified.
The crash led to temporary closures of both northbound and southbound lanes on the 101 on-ramp as authorities conducted their investigation and cleared debris. Caltrans crews also assisted at the scene to ensure the area was safe before reopening the roadway later in the evening.
Officials have not yet released details about what caused the fatal incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
Ongoing Investigations
Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
