Driver, Passenger Killed in Plumas County Crash on SR-36

Plumas County, CA – C, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the collision occurred around 7:52 AM when, for reasons yet to be determined, a silver Lexus SUV went off the roadway and became hidden from view.

The vehicle was later located off the main road, prompting an emergency response from the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office and Caltrans. Authorities said the SUV appeared to have left the highway, struck a dirt embankment, and caused damage to a milepost marker and about 50 feet of barbed wire fencing.

The impact was severe enough to cause fatal injuries to both occupants inside the vehicle. Responders confirmed that both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

Recovery crews were called to assist in removing the heavily damaged SUV, which had lost its wheels and required a flatbed tow truck for transport. Workers accessed the crash site from a nearby flat area off County Road CG to safely extract the vehicle.

The roadway was inspected for damage while investigators took measurements and documented evidence throughout the late morning. Officials have not yet released the names of the victims pending notification of their families.

Single-Vehicle Fatalities

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault,  the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.

Passenger Liability

Driver liability insurance covers both those outside the vehicle and passengers inside. While it can be emotionally difficult to file a Wrongful Death claim against someone close to the victim, the financial challenges after an accident can be overwhelming. As a neutral third party, an experienced personal injury attorney can help to navigate these emotional complexities.
