San Jose, CA – On the evening of Wednesday, October 22, 2025, a single-vehicle crash claimed one life on northbound State Route 87 near the transition to Interstate 280, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 7:19 PM when, for unknown reasons, a silver Mercedes struck the center divider and came to rest facing the wrong direction in the slow lane and right-hand shoulder.
Emergency crews from the San Jose Fire Department arrived shortly after and began providing aid to the occupant. Despite their efforts, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the site.
A SigAlert was issued due to the closure of the northbound transition ramp from State Route 87 to Interstate 280, causing significant traffic delays while investigators worked. The roadway was reopened later in the night once the scene was cleared.
Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Single-Vehicle Fatalities
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
