Merced, CA – On the early morning of Tuesday, October 7, 2025, a fatal multi-vehicle collision involving a big rig occurred on State Route 59 near Oakdale Road, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol received several reports of the crash starting around 6:24 AM, describing a head-on collision that blocked all lanes of traffic. Early information indicated that at least three vehicles were involved, though later reports suggested the possibility of a fourth.
Emergency crews from Riggs Ambulance Service and the Merced Fire Department responded to the scene. CHP later confirmed that the incident resulted in at least one fatality. The Coroner’s Office was notified at approximately 7:01 AM.
One of the vehicles, a big rig, left the roadway and came to rest in a nearby orchard. Debris from the collision covered the highway, prompting Caltrans to close State Route 59 in both directions between Merced Dump Road and Oakdale Road. Tow trucks were called to remove the damaged vehicles and clear the scene.
Traffic remained closed for several hours while investigators documented evidence and recovery operations continued. The roadway reopened shortly after 9:00 AM.
Officials have not yet released the identity of the person who died. The crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol to determine the cause and sequence of events leading up to the fatal collision.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
