Altamont, CA – In the early hours of Sunday, September 21, 2025, a multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 580 East left one person dead from severe injuries, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:46 AM just east of the Stone Cut area on eastbound I-580.
Investigators said a white Honda in lanes three and four collided with an unknown-colored four-door sedan. The Honda sustained major front-end damage and ended up facing the wrong direction across four lanes. Another sedan came to rest approximately 200 yards down the right-hand shoulder. Emergency responders confirmed that one person in the Honda suffered fatal injuries at the scene.
Authorities immediately stopped all eastbound lanes to secure the site and coordinate emergency response. Fire and medical personnel attended to the scene while CHP officers managed traffic and arranged evidence towing. Heavy-duty tow trucks were brought in to recover both vehicles, including the Honda, which had gone over the embankment.
Officials activated a changeable message sign and extended the closure to allow for safe investigation and clearing of debris. Lanes reopened later in the morning once emergency crews completed recovery operations.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the collision.
Wrongful Death Claims
Losing a loved one in a traffic accident is devastating, and the pain can be made worse by the financial strain that often follows. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of income to support dependents of the deceased can leave families struggling. Filing a Wrongful Death claim against those responsible can provide compensation to help with these expenses.
