Fatal Big Rig Crash on I-880 Hegenberger Rd Off-Ramp in Oakland

Oakland, CA – In the early hours of Saturday, August 23, 2025, a fatal crash shut down all lanes of southbound Interstate 880 at the Hegenberger Road off-ramp, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident happened just before 3:50 AM and involved at least two vehicles, including a big rig that was reportedly rear-ended. A possible third vehicle, a pickup truck, stopped along the right-hand shoulder.

An off-duty emergency medical technician who came upon the scene reported that one person was unresponsive, and Oakland Fire Department crews quickly responded.

By 4:02 AM, CHP confirmed that all lanes of I-880 were blocked. A SigAlert went into effect at 4:07 AM, urging drivers to use alternate routes as traffic ground to a halt. Crews worked in the dark hours of the morning to investigate the crash and clear the wreckage.

The Alameda County Coroner responded to the scene just after 4:13 AM to assist with recovery. CHP conducted multiple traffic breaks to allow safe clearance of the crash site.

By around 6:26 AM, CHP canceled the SigAlert and reopened all lanes.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.  Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
