Fatal Crash at I-980 East On-Ramp at 27th St in Oakland

Oakland, CA – On the evening of Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a fatal vehicle collision on the Interstate 980 East on-ramp at 27th Street claimed one life, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash occurred around 10:07 PM at the on-ramp from 27th Street onto eastbound Interstate 980.

Authorities said the collision involved a single vehicle traveling on the on-ramp when it left the roadway and struck barriers, resulting in fatal injuries to the driver. Emergency responders arrived quickly and confirmed the individual was deceased at the scene. CHP requested the Alameda County Coroner to respond and recover the victim.

Traffic on the eastbound lanes of I-980 was temporarily slowed as investigators examined the crash site and collected evidence. Officers from multiple agencies coordinated to secure the area, manage traffic, and document the scene. The coroner’s office later completed their response, and the ramp was reopened once the investigation concluded.

CHP continues to investigate the cause of the collision, including vehicle speed, roadway conditions, and other contributing factors.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
