Bakersfield, CA – On the morning of Wednesday, August 20, 2025, a head-on collision involving two vehicles caused multiple fatalities and serious injuries, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:45 AM on State Route 223 near mile markers 4160 to 5134.
Investigators said a black Chevrolet sedan collided head-on with an SUV in the westbound lanes. Witnesses reported that both vehicles began smoking after the crash, and debris covered both lanes of the highway. Additional callers described one of the vehicles as a gray sedan and the other as an SUV of unknown color.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and confirmed the severity of the wreck. Crews found victims trapped inside at least one of the vehicles and began rescue operations. Firefighters worked with specialized equipment to extract the occupants while paramedics provided advanced medical care.
Authorities reported at least two victims as “red tags,” indicating critical injuries, and another as “yellow tag,” indicating serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Officials later confirmed multiple fatalities at the scene, though they have not yet released the names of the deceased pending notification of family.
The impact shut down both lanes of State Route 223. The coroner’s office responded to the scene shortly after 1:15 AM. Paramedics transported surviving victims to Kern Medical Center for treatment of severe injuries.
CHP investigators continue to examine the collision to determine whether speed, impairment, or other factors contributed to the deadly crash.
