Richmond Bridge Crash Kills 1, Injures 1 at I-580 near South 23rd St, Stenmark Ave

Richmond, CA – In the early hours of Tuesday, August 12, 2025, a two-vehicle collision on eastbound Interstate 580 resulted in one fatality and serious injuries to another, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 1:40 AM near the South 23rd Street on ramp, just west of Stenmark Avenue, at the end of the Richmond Bridge.

Emergency responders arrived to find a red Range Rover and a black sedan involved in a severe crash blocking the first lane of eastbound traffic. Firefighters reported one of the vehicles fully engulfed in flames, which was quickly extinguished to allow rescue efforts. 

Despite prompt medical attention, the occupant of the burning vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The other party sustained critical injuries and was transported by emergency medical services to a nearby hospital for treatment.

All lanes were reopened by approximately 4:50 AM, ending the closure and allowing normal traffic flow to resume.

Investigators continue to determine the cause of the crash, including reports that one vehicle may have been traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes prior to the collision. No further details about the identities or ages of the involved parties have been released at this time.
