San Mateo Driver Killed in Hwy 101, Embarcadero Rd Crash

San Mateo, CA – In the early morning hours of Monday, August 11, 2025, a single-vehicle collision involving a white Toyota Sienna resulted in a fatality, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident occurred around 12:31 AM on northbound U.S. Highway 101 near the Embarcadero Road on-ramp.

Authorities said the vehicle struck an unknown object and came to rest on the right shoulder of the highway. The vehicle remained drivable after the collision.

Emergency responders arrived quickly and found the scene blocked with all northbound lanes closed to traffic. Caltrans was notified to assist with traffic management and implement a hard closure of the roadway while emergency personnel worked at the site.

The incident led to a temporary SigAlert and caused traffic delays during the early morning hours. The vehicle involved was towed from the scene shortly after.

The California Highway Patrol confirmed a fatality and coordinated with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office and coroner’s office as part of the ongoing investigation.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
